Why Ears Don't Drain

Fluid does not drain from the middle ear by gravity alone. A muscle called the tensor veli palatini, or TVP, milks fluid out of the ear and down the throat through the Eustachian tube. In kids who get chronic ear infections, that muscle is often in spasm and will not let fluid through, so it sits, and bacteria move in.

It is not because a child keeps walking through a cloud of bacteria. The same fluid sits in an ear that never gets the chance to drain the way it was designed to, infection after infection, until someone asks why the drainage itself is not working.

The Birth Connection

The TVP gets its nerve supply from the top of the neck, the same area under the most pressure during birth, especially with a forceps, vacuum, or C-section delivery. Nine times out of ten, chronic ear infections trace back to that stress on the upper neck.

When the nerve to the TVP is irritated, the muscle stops doing its job, fluid stops draining, and an ear infection follows. Getting the TVP working again, not just clearing the current infection, is the goal.
