Koren Specific Technique

A Gentle Touch for Your Comfort

In late 2003, as a result of much research and clinical experimentation, Dr. Tedd Koren developed an improved, gentle but yet very powerful form of chiropractic spinal care that he now calls Koren Specific Technique (KST). This unique breakthrough approach allows patients to be analyzed better than ever before, with the adjustments holding stronger and for longer periods of time.

Then in 2007, Dr. Saylor being in pain due to her first pregnancy, needed to find relief, discovered this after months of research. After attending a seminar and one adjustment, the decision was made. She is now one of the top experts in KST and mentors others around the world.

By using the ArthroStim® instrument, gentle and specific adjustments are preformed to restore your body’s proper alignment. KST is so gentle that babies often sleep right through their adjustments! The technique allows us to perform cranial-sacral work in a gentle, effective manner, especially in newborns and babies. Most people feel extremely relaxed afterward, and occasionally may be tired.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is KST?

Koren Specific Technique is one of the over 300 different chiropractic techniques. Dr. Tedd Koren developed it in 2003. The doctor uses a tool called the ArthroStim®, which delivers a specific tapping to the area that needs to be adjusted.

It differs from traditional adjusting in many ways, including the fact that the patient rarely lies down to be adjusted, and can be adjusted in the position that creates the pain. The technique is gentle enough to be used on your cranial bones and addresses many concerns that are not addressed with traditional chiropractic.

Why is KST different from traditional chiropractic?

There is no cracking, popping or twisting. A gentle technique is effective for pain and other health concerns, like allergies or emotional issues. It is specific to the area of your body that we need to adjust, and the effects are often longer lasting. The doctors use a tool called the ArthroStim, which delivers a specific tapping to the area that needs to be adjusted.
What makes KST better?

KST is gentle, yet powerful, and the results often last. There is no twisting, cracking or popping, and the doctors can adjust even your cranial bones. KST is also unique, because we can adjust you in the posture that hurts, including in motion (like with a golf swing). All chiropractic techniques work, but our doctors have tried many techniques and found that KST is the gentlest and makes the most impact.
Does KST get the same results as traditional chiropractic?

We have seen ever better results than traditional chiropractic! All techniques work, but KST is different in that it allows us to adjust you in the position of pain and is gentle enough to use on your cranial bones. Because the technique we use allows your body to process the adjustment, rather than using our hands to force the adjustment, patients are usually less sore after the adjustments, and the results tend to last longer.
Are all tools the same?

There are many different chiropractic tools. One that many are familiar with is called the Activator. It might seem similar to the ArthroStim, but actually adjusts differently. We have found that the results we get with the ArthroStim are amazing, and the body responds quickly.
Do other techniques use the same tool as KST?

There are other chiropractic techniques that can use the ArthroStim, but they use it differently. With KST, it is actually the order that the doctors adjust that makes it work so well.

Once I go to a chiropractor, will I always have to go?

Everyone responds differently to chiropractic care, but the doctors will make recommendations for correcting your problem. Then it is up to you to decide how much chiropractic care you wish to benefit from.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

The doctor uses a handheld tool called an ArthroStim® that gently and precisely taps the bone back into alignment. The tool itself adjusts your body at a very specific rate, which is 12 hertz—a rate that is under the pain threshold and at the healing rate. It is very gentle, yet still powerful. The key is that the doctor asks your body to go in the right position, versus just telling it with a forceful thrust.
Can chiropractic cure everything?

As chiropractors, we cure nothing. We work on the nervous system, which controls every organ, cell and system in the body.
Why would I have my newborn or young child adjusted?

The first spinal misalignment often occurs during the birthing process. We adapt the adjusting procedures to a child’s spine. Children seem to get the same improvement in overall health as adults, but often faster.

The number one reason children see the chiropractor is for ear infections, but it also works great for other problems like asthma, allergies, ADHD, autism, behavioral issues and general wellness care. All of our doctors specialize in pediatrics and pregnancy.

Can chiropractic help with colic and how?

Though chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic, it can help restore proper nervous system function. With the way we care for babies, it’s a little different, because we find a lot more belly upsets and diaphragm disturbances due to the crying, so the adjustment is very different too.

At Van Every Family Chiropractic Center, we get to the root of why a baby is so upset, determining what’s wrong and then fixing the issue. To do that, we do a lot of cranial-sacral work, specifically looking at the rotation of the sacrum. Those two areas are the key. We usually see an immediate resolution with babies and colic. The crying is almost always gone after the first adjustment.

How much does it cost?

Our examination fee is $200 and adjustments are $65. Progress exams are $100. Consultations are $50, which can be applied to the amount of the initial exam fee once you decide to become a patient.
Do I need a referral from my physician?

Yes, if your insurance policy requires one.
Do you work with medical doctors?

We will work with your medical doctor and/or physical therapist to ensure we have the best treatment plan for you.
Will I get adjusted on my first visit?

On your first visit, we will perform the examination. It is important for us to review your history and all the tests. Therefore, you will not be adjusted on your first visit.
Will you suggest exercises or other things I can do?

Once we get to know you and your body, we can give you what your body needs in exercises and stretches.
Can someone who has had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes, the technique we use is so gentle with no cracking or popping, and is safe even if you have had back surgery.
How does the doctor know where to adjust me?

The doctor will gently challenge an area of the body by touching it. Then, using the occiput or the base of the skull, they will get a neurological response from the body to know exactly where to adjust. This is like applied kinesiology (AK). So you feel them touch your head, and then they will tap your body with the ArthroStim.
What are the tests you do?

Our motto is “We don’t guess, we test.” So we will do the highest level exam possible. This includes a physical examination and postural analysis using a computerized system that shows us exactly how your spine is affected.

We use the state-of-the-art INSiGHT™ Subluxation Station to perform a series of painless, non-invasive tests with no radiation.

The first test is the Heart Rate Variability, which collects data on your heartbeat. It gives us a snapshot of how you are dealing with stress and your environment.

The second test is the thermal scanner, which measures the difference in temperature on each side of your spine.

The third test is an EMG. The scanners measure small amounts of electrical activity. The more your muscles contract, the more they generate and cause spasms.

All our tests answer the one question no one has answered: Why do I have this problem? Or why does my child have these problems?

Webster Technique

Developed by the late Larry Webster, D.C., the Webster Technique helps release stress on the pelvis, relaxing surrounding ligaments and reducing the sacral and pelvic subluxations to help restore normal function. These subluxations are common during pregnancy causing a variety of symptoms for the mother and, in many cases, interfering with the baby assuming the normal head-down position in preparation for delivery. The goal of the pregnancy chiropractic adjustment is to improve the neuro-biomechanical function by removing vertebral subluxation.
