Tongue Ties and Lip Ties

Infant sleepingYou’ve probably heard the saying “a little tongue tied” – but you probably don’t know where it came from.

A tongue or lip tie can be detrimental to a person’s life, whether infant or adult. It can prevent you from speaking easily, and in babies, can stop them from being able to feed.

At Van Every Family Chiropractic Center, plenty of parents have been brought to us with a tongue or lip tie.

The Symptoms You Need Help

If you think your baby may have a tongue tie or lip tie, there are some signs to look out for:

  • Trouble feeding
  • Fussiness
  • Hungriness
  • Colic
  • Not gaining weight

What Exactly Is It?

A tongue or lip tie occurs when the tissue called a frenulum is too tight or improperly attached to the tongue or lip. In a tongue tie, the band of tissue under the tongue is affected. It means the tongue can’t move around like it should.

A lip tie occurs when the frenulum is attached from the top lip to the upper teeth, far closer than it should be. It means the lip can’t be lifted as it should be.

Revisions for Tongue and Lip Tie

We often see patients after they have had a revision procedure. It’s quick and easy to get through, for babies and adults alike. With babies, there can be an immediate difference in how they feed and their mood.

Adults can have their entire face shape change, as well as see problems like pain and tension diminish dramatically.

Where Chiropractic Fits In

Chiropractic helps your nervous system, which is responsible for telling everything in the body how to function. Since a tongue or lip tie involves getting the muscles in that area to work properly, you want to make sure the nerves can communicate with the muscles like they should.
