The Science Behind Cold & Flu Season

What are colds and influenza, and what causes them?

woman-with-fluThe common cold is caused by viruses that affect the nose, throat, and sinuses. Symptoms typically include a stuffy or runny nose, scratchy throat, chest congestion, and watery eyes. A fever typically does not accompany the common cold however it does with the flu. Influenza is also a viral infection that attacks the mucosal lining of the upper respiratory tract and presents with body aches and chills. Both of these bugs are opportunistic and thrive on a weakened immune system. Fighter T-cells are created by your body to attack and eliminate these viruses. The internal environment of your body and its function dictates whether or not these T-cells can do their job, and whether or not you’ll get “sick” when you come in contact with these germs.

How can chiropractic care help?

Chiropractic care is not a cure for either colds or flu, but an adjustment can increase your immune system by up to 48% for the next 24-48 hours. The fighter T-cells will be working at their optimum.

Here are some other things you can do to support your immune system:

1. Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat.

2. Exercise regularly.

3. Get adequate sleep.
